Solium Infernum Updates

September 14th, 2008 by Troy Goodfellow · Cryptic Comet, Design, Preview

Just a reminder that the last month or so has been chock full of design diary stuff about Vic Davis’s upcoming Solium Infernum.

Some highlights.

My design goal was to incorporate both known and hidden information into a system that let you try and get a feel for how combats might resolve but had enough uncertainty to make them interesting and dramatic.

The limited actions mechanic is a common feature of Eurostyle games. On any given turn you can pick from some finite action menu a limited number of times. Or you can claim a “role” card for a given turn and get its benefits. This is opposed to a classic hex based wargame where you can move almost any counter on the board unless it lacks supply or some such other action limiting state is involved. AE was a nice mix of both of these styles. For Solium Infernum I wanted first and foremost a Grand Strategy type feeling and I felt the limited actions mechanic fit perfectly with this.

You can now respond to the message from the Infernal Conclave that you have been challenged (or initiated the challenge) to resolve a Vendetta via single combat. You have 2 turns to pick your champion or hire one in the Infernal Bazaar and get him ready. Once both players submit their champions then the duel is processed on that next turn….and we see who is still standing and who is banished to the Abyss.

OK, that last one requires a little more context if you want it make sense. But there’s an Infernal Bazaar! How can you pass that up?

Dear Gamestop

September 12th, 2008 by Troy Goodfellow · Industry

In a political season full of the usual misinformation, misunderstandings and outright lies, it’s not surprising that Gamestop’s Bob McKenzie would say:

We’re not saying we won’t be impacted at all by digital distribution, but the average customer isn’t going to have the patience for a 72-hour download for a game on their system

I download a review copy of Spore earlier this week. It took less than three hours. So either Mr. McKenzie is still on dial-up or he knows nothing about digital distribution.

Romance Review

September 11th, 2008 by Troy Goodfellow · Crispy Gamer, Review

Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI is worth a look. It’s not the kind of game that I would play every night, and I still don’t feel like I have a firm grasp of the diplomacy or on how many retainers I should actually have to start with to get a fair shot.

But I like how it presents interesting strategic and tactical decisions. Retreating is often the best course and I love converting enemy generals, though their loyalty always seems to be higher than that of my own men. It’s repetitive and unclear and in dire need of UI triage. But it’s still appealing.

No More Ensemble

September 10th, 2008 by Troy Goodfellow · Ensemble, Industry

I’d love to get a direct quote from any of the very talented designers at Ensemble (Dave Pottinger, Greg Street, Bruce Shelley) but we’ll have to make do with Microsoft’s official statements.

Some outstanding questions:

1) What about Halo Wars‘s post-release support? How does the end of Ensemble impact the chances of downloadable content or patches?

2) If Bruce Shelley and other core team members leave for a new studio, what happens to the Age of Empires IP?

3) What does this mean for the future of other studios owned by Microsoft?

4) In spite of Halo Wars, Ensemble is best known as a PC developer. Is this another nail in the coffin of the Games for Windows initiative?

5) If a studio as successful as Ensemble is a fiscal risk for a business titan like Microsoft, what has to change in game development to make companies like this viable again?

Once we see Halo Wars and the studio closes down, it might be time for a retrospective, even though they have nothing to their credit outside of the Age games. There’s still a lot to say about how Ensemble invented the historical RTS and transformed how the subgenre evolved. Maybe someone will sit down with me for that.

Jeff Green’s New Blog

September 10th, 2008 by Troy Goodfellow · Blogs

It’s going on the blog roll, even though I’m not sure how much Jeff can actually say about how evil EA is. Glad that Greenspeak is still active in one way or another.

Now You’re Pushing It

September 9th, 2008 by Troy Goodfellow · Electronic Arts

Sims 3 is well along in development, but that’s not stopping EA from squeezing every last shekel they can out of Sims 2 users.

Mansion and garden stuff? Will my working stiff Sims even get close to needing mansion stuff?

This expansion is targeting the architects and home decorating sub-tier of the Sims audience, of course, not the normal gamers like me who just play it to see what it’s like to have seven girlfriends.
