Game Preservation Feature

April 8th, 2009 by Troy Goodfellow · Uncategorized

New feature up at Crispy Gamer, mostly focusing on my local university’s efforts to preserve games and virtual worlds. It’s pretty heavy stuff. You’ve been warned.

Will Wright Leaves EA, retires from AAA game design?

April 8th, 2009 by Troy Goodfellow · Electronic Arts, Maxis

Stephen Totilo is reporting that game god Will Wright is leaving EA to focus on his other hobbies.

Will Wright, famous designer of “Sim City,” “The Sims,” and “Spore” is leaving Electronic Arts, his publisher announced today. Wright will be running the Stupid Fun Club, an organization he started in 2001 with EA and had used for robot experiments, TV pilots and other offbeat ideas for years.

This Stupid Fun Club is co-owned by EA, so he’s not leaving the family entirely, but his departure from the mainstream of game design is probably the biggest news to hit the industry in many years.

I’ll have more once I digest this information.

Three Moves Ahead Episode 7 – Collectible Card Games

April 7th, 2009 by Troy Goodfellow · Design, Podcast, Three Moves Ahead

ThreeMovesAhead

The full panel is on hand this week and Troy is way out of his element as they talk about Collectible Card Games as strategy games, starting with Battleforge and moving through Star Chamber, Culdcept Saga and Magic. Should Bruce by a PSP? Who uses the phrase “synergy of modalities of gameplay”? Why does Julian sound like he’s talking through a cardboard tube? And what game does Tom absolutely not want any of you to buy this week?

Listen here as these and more questions are answered. (RSS feed.)

Baseball Game Comparison

April 7th, 2009 by Troy Goodfellow · Baseball, Crispy Gamer

One of the reasons that Bill Abner remains the dean of sports video game journalism is that he insists on running lots of simulations to see how the stats work out. He did this to great effect last year with some football sims.

He chose to do a smaller sample sim for Crispy Gamer to compare MLB 09: The Show and Major League Baseball 2K9 .

Personally, I see noting wrong with 2K9’s National League East predictions.

Swag Kits A Plot to Imprison Media?

April 6th, 2009 by Troy Goodfellow · Industry, Media

I’m too low on the totem pole to get swag kits in the mail. But it looks like EA is sending out very posh swag for press tapped to cover Godfather II.

The packages include brass knuckles.

A friend suggested that this is a nefarious plot to get all the games media arrested before they can write their reviews.
