I’m assuming that this insane story about advertisements stuck on the front covers of magazines is a parody of people saying that print media has sold out or that it’s on its last legs or something.
Because I can’t believe Tim Rogers has never seen this before. I’ve been complaining about fake covers for years.

Slow Week
March 31st, 2008 · 3 Comments
This will be a slow posting week, because the work week is anything but slow. I have one preview, two reviews, an interview to transcribe and some housework that can’t wait. Plus whatever else pops up in the interim and something always does.
I still want to get more of my ancient series up, though. I’ve […]

Colonization Retro AAR

The best thing about Rock, Paper, Shotgun is the comfort in finally having some serious PC gaming peers in a blogosphere dominated by console gaming.
The second best thing RPS is that the team is full of great writers, each of whom has a unique voice. Some of us soldier on alone.
The third best thing is […]

Culture as a Mechanic or, Get Out of My Head Michael
March 3rd, 2008 · 5 Comments
While trying to use propaganda posts in Sins of a Solar Empire last week, I started thinking about cultural control in strategy gaming, how culture assimilation is an either/or proposition, how an homogeneous culture is assumed to be better than one with spillover from neighbors, how rival cultures bring nothing with them but trouble.

Still no news on a release date over there, […]

My weekend Vassal/Brettspiel/Skype sessions with Bruce and browsing at Board Game Geek have gotten me more interested in how I can make board games a bigger part of my life. To that end, I give you Bill Abner’s Top Ten Board Games of last year.
Shogun sure looks pretty.

Me and My Big Mouth

Nothing like stirring the pot to get a little attention. My recent counterpost to Dr. Nathan Toronto’s article on The Future of the RTS has (with my consent) been reprinted on Gamasutra. I hope the conversation will continue, though I should probably have added a paragraph or two about the potential for Sins of a […]
Everyone Likes Essay Contests
January 24th, 2008 · No Comments
Shack News is running an essay contest in which you have to write about your favorite civilization. I guess it’s part of a promo for the upcoming Civilization: Revolution. (I suppose I could have contests, but I’m lazy and cheap. Nobody gives me stuff to award as prizes, but then I don’t ask either. Because […]

Sometimes You Always Win

Jeremy Greenfield of Gamers With Jobs has just posted an interesting summary of his attempt to drive a city into the ground in SimCity: Societies. He found, as many critics did, that the system was too forgiving of screw-ups and that it may be harder to kill a city than to create one.
Thanks to the […]
