Best Boardgames of 2009

January 27th, 2010 by Troy Goodfellow · 7 Comments · Board Games

There are a lot of these lists every year, but I always link to Bill Abner’s for personal and professional reasons. His summaries are very brief and He also mixes his 2008 and 2009 games, which you can give him grief for over there. Our tastes generally line up, so he’s a reliable metric for me.

Except Dominion should be number 1 on every list ever.

Every time someone compares Small World to History of the World, my need to buy a copy of it keeps getting larger.

I really need to try Dominions…

Arrgh… Dominion… Too much reading that thread on QT3 and listening to the cancelled game here…

I don’t know that Brief History of the World is really like Small World. I’m still waiting on BHotW to show up, but I do know it has civs coming and going on and off the map, like SW does and that it did inspire parts of the SW design.

But I don’t think it has the race/trait combo stuff and it also has a lotta dice.

Dominion is a good game and is certainly worth playing. It’s just overrated.

Sorry, should have been more clear. I used to play History of the World (the game that inspired A Brief History of the World) a lot. As I told Troy once, it was my game to try to drag people away from Risk in college. I was actually referring to Small World as the game I need to pick up.

I didnt even know that they were releasing a “significantly revised version” of History of the World. Guess that goes on my list of games I need to buy this year as well.

I’m glad I’m not the only person who thinks Dominion is overrated.

I still haven’t tired of Dominion, although I can understand how people might get burned out after a while, particularly if sticking to the basic card set.

I didn’t realize that the Tales of the Arabian Nights reprint was out.

Galaxy Trucker is a blast, mostly because of the epic potential for catastrophic failure mid-game when you “take a large potato up the seven.”

    C’mon, not enough consims!

@Wader: You may also want to give Vinci a try. Same designer as Small World, and very similar mechanic (e.g. different random civ traits). For a Eurogame it’s one of the better, but still…it’s a Eurogame…
