{"id":472,"date":"2006-10-23T11:55:37","date_gmt":"2006-10-23T15:55:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/flashofsteel.com\/index.php\/2006\/10\/23\/interview-with-bruce-shelley\/"},"modified":"2006-10-24T11:06:42","modified_gmt":"2006-10-24T15:06:42","slug":"interview-with-bruce-shelley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flashofsteel.com\/index.php\/2006\/10\/23\/interview-with-bruce-shelley\/","title":{"rendered":"Interview with Bruce Shelley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My <em>Civ Chronicles<\/em> background interview with Bruce Shelley has been distributed to a variety of places. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shacknews.com\/docs\/press\/102306_civ_chronicles.x\">You can find it here at Shacknews<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shelley added some of his own reminiscences of working on <em>Civilization<\/em> as part of a <em>Chronicles<\/em> idea that didn&#8217;t quite pan out.<\/p>\n<p>Shelley&#8217;s reflections underline just how difficult game production used to be, and probably still is. Even in the Golden Age that Wasn&#8217;t, Microprose was not convinced by Meier&#8217;s track record, or at least not enough to get enthusiastic about <em>Civilization<\/em>. Keep in mind that Meier&#8217;s name was originally added to <em>Pirates!<\/em> because the suits figured that some of his flight sim audience might recognize the name and pick up the action\/adventure title. Great game ideas are killed every day for a number of reasons, and not all of them are fair.<\/p>\n<p>The high cost of game development is the biggest barrier to odd ideas getting greenlighted, but marketing or a perceived track record can get past that sort of thing. This keeps out the riff-raff, mostly, but it also enforces a level of caution on developers that may not have been as prevalent in the industry&#8217;s lean days. Not that games aren&#8217;t creative any more, they are. More games are being made, so it would be a miracle if none were pushing the limits. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quartertothree.com\/game-talk\/showpost.php?p=782048&#038;postcount=8\">There was no Golden Age<\/a> when things were all shiny and brilliant.<\/p>\n<p>So it&#8217;s a minor wonder that <em>Civilization<\/em> was made, that it was a hit and that it has kept getting noticeably better with each iteration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EDIT<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civfanatics.com\/interviews\/CivChronicles_Bruce_Shelley.php\">CivFanatics once again<\/a> gave the interview the gold treatment.
