{"id":2586,"date":"2010-08-17T10:14:33","date_gmt":"2010-08-17T15:14:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/flashofsteel.com\/?p=2586"},"modified":"2010-08-17T10:14:33","modified_gmt":"2010-08-17T15:14:33","slug":"age-of-empires-online-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flashofsteel.com\/index.php\/2010\/08\/17\/age-of-empires-online-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Age of Empires Online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ensemble exiles who landed at Robot Entertainment <a href=\"http:\/\/ageofempiresonline.com\/\">are making an online RTS<\/a> out of one of my favorite franchises. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Marrying fresh features with classic RTS gameplay, <em>Age of Empires Online<\/em>  pays tribute to the original game while incorporating a new look, feel, and approach that appeals to long-time fans, newcomers, and everyone in between.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At first glance, reading about it might remind you of Ikariam and Nile Online and Travian and all those other real time games that bore me before long but it probably isn&#8217;t that at all.<\/p>\n<p>The big differences?<\/p>\n<p>1) This is Ensemble (sort of) and they have earned my faith.<\/p>\n<p>2) There are quests, both solo and co-op, which means you have things to do that don&#8217;t just involved saving up for that next building<\/p>\n<p>3) They are starting with one Civilization but promising others post-release. So more varied game play and experiences will be available.<\/p>\n<p>4) <a href=\"http:\/\/ageofempiresonline.com\/Images\/screenshots\/battle.jpg\">The battles look like battles<\/a>, so there is going to be some real online RTS stuff here and not just shuffling a certain number of spearmen around and waiting.<\/p>\n<p>5) Villagers &#8220;pick berries, chop wood, and construct the buildings you use to train your army. Their upgrades let them carry more resources and move and build faster.&#8221; An econ heavy online RTS?<\/p>\n<p><em>Age of Empires Online<\/em> will be exclusive to Games for Windows Live some time in 2011.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ensemble exiles who landed at Robot Entertainment are making an online RTS out of one of my favorite franchises.
