{"id":2246,"date":"2010-02-26T13:41:20","date_gmt":"2010-02-26T18:41:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/flashofsteel.com\/?p=2246"},"modified":"2010-02-28T16:14:40","modified_gmt":"2010-02-28T21:14:40","slug":"napoleon-total-war-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flashofsteel.com\/index.php\/2010\/02\/26\/napoleon-total-war-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Napoleon: Total War Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.1up.com\/do\/reviewPage?cId=3178121\">Read it here at 1up.<\/a> Not especially happy with how it turned out, writing wise.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the problem is that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B002RD6MV4?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=flaofste-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=B002RD6MV4\">Napoleon Total War<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=flaofste-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B002RD6MV4\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/><br \/>\n can be seen as an improvement over Empire in many ways. The attrition and replenishment mechanics are very well done and there are finally historic battles to fight. And the AI is better, though still not perfect.<\/p>\n<p>I get very annoyed when great content is locked behind walls. I don&#8217;t want to have to fight Lodi before I go to Waterloo or Borodino. I want to lead France to victory over the kingdoms of Europe in my first campaign, not after I&#8217;ve already fought two smaller ones. This is like <em>Civilization<\/em> only allowing you to play as the Americans until you&#8217;ve defeated a nation in battle. Then you can eat its heart and lead it in your next game. <em>Tin Soldiers: Alexander<\/em> did this with its battles and I hated it then, even though I loved the game. People play Napoleonic games to play France.<\/p>\n<p>This is not new for Creative Assembly. Both <em>Rome<\/em> and <em>Medieval 2<\/em> forced you play a campaign (or edit a file) before unlocking other nations. But there you had more choices and the stars of the story (Rome and Western Europe) were available to begin with.<\/p>\n<p>The review is a positive one &#8211; I will play it again, I think. Rob Zacny likes it more than I do, Tom Chick likes it much less. Maybe we can find some time to talk about it on Three Moves Ahead.
