{"id":1903,"date":"2009-11-03T09:44:49","date_gmt":"2009-11-03T14:44:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/flashofsteel.com\/?p=1903"},"modified":"2009-11-03T09:44:49","modified_gmt":"2009-11-03T14:44:49","slug":"the-escapist-goes-to-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flashofsteel.com\/index.php\/2009\/11\/03\/the-escapist-goes-to-war\/","title":{"rendered":"The Escapist Goes to War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.escapistmagazine.com\/features\/issue\/226\">This week&#8217;s issue of The Escapist is dedicated to the idea of war<\/a>, and the articles are generally interesting. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.escapistmagazine.com\/articles\/view\/issues\/issue_226\/6726-Wargaming-Through-the-Ages\">Greg Tito&#8217;s &#8220;history of wargaming&#8221;<\/a> doesn&#8217;t really add anything new or interesting to the already large library on this topic but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.escapistmagazine.com\/articles\/view\/issues\/issue_226\/6728-The-New-Basic-Training\">Shawn Williams article on the impact of video game soldiering to real war<\/a> is quite good.<\/p>\n<p>The two stand-out articles are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.escapistmagazine.com\/articles\/view\/issues\/issue_226\/6729-The-Agony-of-Defeat\">Rob Zacny&#8217;s ode to <em>Silent Hunter III<\/em><\/a>, explaining how it is a game that never hides the inevitability of defeat and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.escapistmagazine.com\/articles\/view\/issues\/issue_226\/6734-A-View-From-the-Trenches\">Jim Rossignol&#8217;s piece on <em>Men of War<\/em><\/a>, which recently got an expansion and I still haven&#8217;t played.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week&#8217;s issue of The Escapist is dedicated to the idea of war, and the articles are generally interesting.
