Oh, do by all means play RoL; it deserves to be played. I'm just hedging my way into multiplayer (unfortunately there are not a lot of players online), and am positively gleeful about how surprising it can be. There is so much variety in the tactics that can be adopted.

And people positively study this game - more so than any other strategy game I've played. I have notes aplenty myself, and several successful players have told me that they've achieved their skills only by dedicated replay-watching.

It's a head-banger of a game, but in the best way.

(but yes, the single-player campaign is terrible. The heroes were the only thing which kept me playing, but I've not picked up on the Alin section for months)

Doesn't look like it does; RoL will sit around until I finish Oblivion and play some more MTW2 and BF2142, then I may take a look at it.

Hopefully it won't go the way of Jane's Longbow, which I bought but never REALLY played, which was a pity.

The first chapter of the RoL campaign starts with a bang, but before long you realize that all the area tweaking and hero hunting is all you are going to be doing for the next zillion turns. I doubt that anyone is really happy with the campaign as it turned out.

Does your pack come with the Rise of Nations expansion, too? Because Thrones and Patriots has some amazing campaign stuff in it. I used to replay the Cold War one over and over again.

I got RoL because it was selling for $30 and you got RoN original for free; haven't even installed RoN yet but 10 y.o. nephew seemed to enjoy RoL... until he got bored of a campaign mission.

Troy,

Happy New Year, and I have two requests of you, please, sir:

1) Acquire DoW: Dark Crusade by any means necessary. I think you will love it, and that you haven't dipped your toe into the series is a shame. Of course, I've got Dominions 3 sitting here waiting for me, so I'm a bit of a hypocrite.

2) I am seconding the request for you to post your RoL review. I really liked the game as well and agree with you and Tom Chick, but unlike him I am not mystified at all by its lack of success. Once you add together the bad single-player campaign, the deep gameplay, the bizarre cast of characters, the counter-intuitive counters (ha), the fast combat right out of the gate combined with a slow tech process, and bad marketing, you get what you deserve. Throwing $50,000 at players in tournaments doesn't compensate for a distinct lack of personality. Unique, yes. Personality, no.

If you do Top Tens, I'd be curious!
